The tournament opened in Michaelmas with a ‘Capture the Egg’ task, in which Team Fleur and Team Krum battled it out in University Parks to capture the dragon’s egg -also known as a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. Team Fleur emerged from the task victorious; albeit after using devious tactics by hiding their egg in a tree. Team Krum put up a strong fight, even with an injured member, but unfortunately were not fast enough to capture the egg from the opposing team. In attempt to capture Team Fleur’s egg, Team Krum left their egg unguarded for a split second, which allowed Team Fleur to steal their egg, and thus win the first task.
For our second task, teams had to compete to show their knowledge of wizarding fashion, in Madam Malkin’s Tailoring Competition. Each team had to design three different outfits: School Uniform, Dress Robes and wizarding accessories. Points were awarded out of ten for the following categories: comfort, style, magical enhancements, consideration of the target demographic and execution of ideas. After a couple of hours of busy work, the three teams unveiled their designs, with Team Fleur’s being particularly interesting with disputes as to whether a Fanged Frisbee counted as a wizarding accessory. Team Harry’s design was a valiant effort, but it was decided that the amount of magical enhancements could hinder the comfort and execution of the designs. The undisputed winners of this task were Team Krum, as their designs excelled in all areas, and the execution of their ideas was deemed by the judges to exceed expectations. At the end of the second task, Teams Fleur were tied in first place with 70 points each, with team Harry coming close in second place with 50 points.
Competition for the final task was fierce, with all for teams competing for the title of Triwizard Champion. In the spirit of the final task in the books, our very own IT officer designed a Treasure Hunt that tested the Champion’s knowledge of Oxford. Clues included riddles such as finding a lock Alohomora won’t work on, magic beyond what they do at Hogwarts, and a Ravenclaw-coloured mammal. If you would like to try out the Treasure Hunt for yourself, we’ve attached the clues and the answers. Let us know how long it takes you!
Out of our Champions, Team Cedric were the quickest, completing the task in only 1 hour 10 minutes. Team Fleur came second, overtaking both Team Harry and Team Krum and arriving at the end of the clues in 90 minutes. After a shaky start, getting lost early on in the task; Team Harry were able to regain their time of 2 hours 27 minutes with one penalty, coming in a very respectable third place. Team Krum quickly got in the lead at the start of the task, finding the first clue in a mere five minutes, but unfortunately used CHEAT five times, adding 1 hour 15 minutes to their time, putting them in last place at a total time of 3 hours 28 minutes.
